Administering As Needed (PRN) Medications in MAR

Frequency Every, As Needed (PRN) Medications

When a medication is ordered with a Frequency of Every selection, and marked As Needed (PRN), the medication will appear on the MAR Administration tab based on the last administration time and the time interval defined by the Frequency.

Example: If a medication is marked As Needed (PRN) with a dosage for Every 4 hours, the medication will appear available to give in Patients | MAR | MAR Administration until the medication is given. After the medication is given, it will not appear available to give again until 4 hours from the time it was last given.

If a medication is ordered with range as the Quantity, is marked As Needed (PRN), and has a Frequency with an “Every” selection, MAR will calculate the available dosage based on the interval defined by the frequency. The overdose checking will utilize the interval prior to the entered administration time to prevent the maximum dosage from being exceeded.

Example: If a medication is ordered for a Quantity of 1-2 caps, has a Frequency of Every 4 hours, and is marked As Needed (PRN), if the medication is first administered with a partial dose, 1 cap, the medication will remain on the MAR Administration tab so that the additional 1 cap can be administered.

Once the full dosage has been given for an interval, the medication will not appear on the MAR Administration tab again until the time frame when a dose can be given. In the example above, if you administer the remaining 1 cap earlier than 4 hours from the previous administration, the medication will appear on the MAR Administration tab 4 hours after the first partial dose was given. A partial dose will be able to be given at that time. A full dose will be able to be given 4 hours from the time the last dose was given. If a dose exceeding the allowed dose is attempted to be given, a message will display and will not allow you to administer the exceeding dose.

BID, TID, and QID As Needed (PRN) Medications

When a medication is ordered with a Frequency of BID (Twice a Day), TID (Three Times a Day), or QID (Four Times a Day) selection, and marked As Needed (PRN), MAR will utilize a 24 hour day period to calculate the available dosage for the Frequency to verify that dosage in any interval is not exceeded. BID uses a 12 hour time period for dosage, TID uses an 8 hour time period for dosage, and QID uses a 6 hour time period for dosage.

Example: If a medication is ordered for a Quantity of 1-5 caps, has a Frequency of BID (Twice a Day), and is marked As Needed (PRN), if the medication is administered 2 caps at 08:00, an additional 3 caps will be available to give in Patients | MAR | MAR Administration until 12 hours from the time the first dose of the medication was given. If the additional 3 caps are not given, 12 hours from the time the first dose of the medication was given, a full dose will be available.

If the medication is again administered at 09:30 with a quantity of 3 caps the medication will not appear on the MAR Administration tab again until the time frame when a dose can be given. In the example above, a partial dose will be able to be given any time during the 12 hours following the first dose, and a full dose will be able to be given 12 hours from the time the last dose was given.
